Petsmart getting better?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe that employee used to work at a lfs that was put out of business by that petsmart. I never bought anything at Petsmart or Petco and never will. They put the good lfs out of business. I can understand if it's the only choice you have, but I'd rather support the local guys before I have no choice as well. Spend the extra few bucks and buy it at your lfs.

Just thought I'd share a story since there are so many threads bagging on petsmart and petco and the like. I went in the other day to get fish food and overheard the salesman talking with a customer. He was refusing to sell them an oscar to go in their new ten gallon! He informed them that, unless they plan on buying a 75 gallon really soon, he would not sell it to them. He then proceeded to hand them a card and they left. I went up to him afterwards and asked what the card was that he had handed them. He showed me that they keep a stack of cards with a list informative fish websites on them to hand out to unknowing customers. What was the site that was on the top of the list? Monsterfishkeepers.com!
NICE! How cool is that we are a respected opinion in the fish keeping industry :headbang2

Most of the really good LFS stores are being badly affected by big chains like Petsmart and Petco. A good pet store will always attract a clientelle but it's the things like dry stock and all the other things that are sold for a dollar cheaper at Petsmart, Petco, ect that are killing small buisnesses. I would rather pay the extra dollar and keep a knowledgable and deserving pet store in buisness rather than give my money to a nasty money hungry chain that doesn't even care about animals.

Actually its bigger than that. You can buy a stealth at pet smart for 43 dollars. OR YOU CAN GO ONLINE ! And get the same unit for 23 dollars at www.drfostersmith.com (Food for thought !)

Exactly, I doubt anyone here gets stuff at LFS anymore unless they have money to burn. It is just so much cheaper online.

As for fish, that is what the LFS is for. They will always stay in business if they offer stuff the big chains don't. However even then you have to go online for some stuff depending how good your LFS is.

Each has it's purpose, online is for cheap parts and less common fish you don't mind paying an extra $50 on shipping.

LFS is for when you need something right now and it's specific stuff the big chains don't carry like certain foods and such. Sometimes it's not worth it to order online because shipping is more, so you grab a bottle of prime at the LFS or something. They are also good for fish, obviously. And if it's a good LFS they will have some nice fish. Things like filters/tanks I do not buy at the LFS though, way over priced.

Chain stores, good for cheap new tanks when they have sales. Same for filters or if you need one right then and can't wait for shipping. Food, not so much it is fairly over priced in my experience. Fish, not so much either except for some of the more common things. They never really have any oddballs. I did get some of my Clown Loaches and my Oscar at my local Petsmart though. They were cheaper than the LFS and the fish are doing great. However it's rare instances where most of us will buy fish at big chains considering they hardly sell anything out of the ordinary.

Each has it's place and will stay in that place as long as they do it correctly.

I love DrsFosterSmith. It's a shame lfs charges so much for accessories. But I do like the fact that I can check out the fish before the sale. I have had fish shipped but get so anxious about the transport and if they live/die that I need a xanax lol. I'll probably ship more fish in the future because the lfs can only get what their supplier has. Online the world is your oyster.

Wow that is awesome! MFK all the way! Our petsmart is pretty good too. I talked to their manager once, and he was knowledgeable on what water parameters we needed and the cycling progress, and he also knew about proper filtration. I was pretty happy with this store, but our LFS is still soooo much better.

Responsible fish keeping is a rare trait with these large commercialized super pet stores. Glad to here that happen.
