Petsmart

I am the Aquatics Specialist at my Petco. I have to say that I did not recieve much training on fish when I started. I was taught the basics. I already knew some from previous experience, but most of what I know now, I learned by researching online and in books that we carry. I love my job and I hate being away because uneducated people sell my fish while I am away. I am picky about who I sell my fish to. I think that it all depends on the individual store. I have personally heard some horror stories about our local Petsmart. It all just depends...

I have not seen many threads titled petsmart that were positive but even though I, like many people do not agree with the lack of knowledge of the people who work there there are many great things about Petsmart. The thing is even though alot o fpeople say they hate petsmart they would probably be kinda pissed if they closed. Even though they do not take the best care of there fish and do not have the best information the prices of equipment such as filter or air pumps or decorations will beat any prices from a family owned or non chain fish store. I ussulay do not buy my fish from Petsmart but even when I do I have had no problems with them but for all my equipment needs I go to petsmart. Just thought i should throw that out there.
I agree . And also I support my local petsmart as there are not any LFS in the area. If I need something exotic I go to San Jose San Francisco or Sacramento . People need to chill :chillpill: on the petsmart hating

i dont go to petsmart or petco even if they do have better equipment prices just because the family owned stores around here are suffering and i feel im helping them out by buying all my stuff there. even if i am spending more im helping to keep a better store for livestock afloat during the recession. so i dissagree with that... plus in stores around me many of the boxes are already open and something like the impeller or something simple is missing because people dont want to pay for replacement parts...

i agree. some petsmarts or petcos have knowledgable people in them. my petco has a knowledgable staff... (im lucky) but their stock is crappy. I agree it all depends on the store but as in my other post i still dont go there...

In our area we have every major store within 1 mile of each other. The rank in my book goes petLAND, petSMART, petCo, and then meijer and walmart. Petland was awesome and always had tanks in awesome condition, not a great selection but I never had problems with them. Unfortunately they went out of business. Good part was that I got some mbuna for $2.80 each :)

Why do they have a single goldfish in every tank? o0 (atleast mine). I manage a chain store and it is extremely hard to find good help with the hourly wages we and these stores offer. FISH ARE THE LAST PRIORTY in sales and the last area trained in. (except my store). We have carried dats, polys, aros(black, silver and have a leichardi now.), tons of africans...And yes we get 100 people a day with "150$? How many do you get for that?". But hey you cant blame these people at petsmart....Average employee is ignorant, I have to label fish as "BLACK VERTICAL BARS WITH BLUE FINS". Just so idiots dont sell my frontosa for 3.99 as a pleco.......Happens alot.

My favorite of the chains is Petland by far. They have a better selection and more knowledgable employees than almost all the LFS in the area. Plus it seems every week there something new in the store which is pretty cool. Since they are franchises rather than Petsmart and co which are all company owned they have much more leeway in what they stock and thigns like that.

Very true! When I get something in that doesn't already have a photo tag, I take a picture of the fish we have and put it on the card with the price so that my fellow employees know which fish it is... I have had them sell a 3-4 inch "med" Green Terror as a 1-2 inch "small" Texas Cichlid. Even with the pictures there! Drives me nuts!!
