  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was just in my LPS (Local Pet Smart) ;) last weekend and saw they had Ctenopomas for $7.99. Not a bad deal.

The two Petsmart shops near me have recently started carrying Jaguars. A nice addition to their cichlid section, although the recommended tank size is 20 gallons. ;)

I was talking to one of the employees about those tags, cause I saw that, too. He was telling me that it is figured out on a 2" per gallon rule. I kind of got upset with him, cause he thinks a jag or an oscar is cool in a 20 for life. I was going to write Petsmart a letter, to let them know some of their tags are misleading.

I will say, the guy who I was talking to, I had never seen before. He must have been new. And he obviously doesn't represent all of Petsmart, since I have been to many other stores where I have heard them tell customers exactly why they shouldn't be buying certain fish.

Yeah, I've talked to employees at both of the Petsmart shops near me and neither of them knew a thing about Jaguars; let alone the flowerhorns that they were carrying. The store clerks said they would talk to their managers about the tag issues, but who knows. :bs: lol

yes. They get massive.
I picked mine up from a guy who thought it could do well in a 20 gal.....1 year and coutless pounds of food later its well over 14", and now showing any signs of slowing down.

Your typical petsmart shopper cannot house one of these fish properly.

most of the employees won't tell you how big they get and if they actually do most customers won't LISTEN

"It'll be fine in my 55! That's like, the biggest fish tank you can get!"

:screwy:

In my defense for working at Petsmart,

I started working there because when i would go in there to browse fish, i would always act like i knew nothing, and try and mix certain fish that i knew wouldnt go together. They would say "No those wont work, or that fish is mean!" Thats it, i was like man you need to tell people why, so i got a job there to educate "Dumbasses" on how to keep fish. I get really pissed when people come in and say i want fish for my 5g tank, i'm just like um have you heard of a Betta? Sometimes i show them danios, small tetras and guppys, sometimes even dwarf puffers, but then they dont have a heater and they cant seem to see why fish need warm water? :screwy: So i wont sell any of the Africans to anyone with a 29g or smaller, i have made exceptions once in awhile but not very often, i think like 3 or 4 times, i wont sell SA to anyone with anything smaller than a 55g and even then i hate to do it because the width issue, and then the big Semi-aggressive fish depending on size, Bala sharks, tinfoils, pacu, Dragon Goby, silver tips, etc... usually same as SA. I work about 3-5 days a week and deny sales about 20-30 times a week. i have had a guy come in wanting an Oscar for his 55g, when i asked him what was in it he said Green Terror, Midas, Jack Dempsey, Red Devil, 4 convicts and a Red Terror. I would not sell him any fish, and he tried to get me fired, i then told him that all his fish would end up to big for his tank, and he told me to "****-off you little punk kid, i will have your job and my fish" well he got neither  So i deal with all kinds of *******s and *****es just ask me i have got tons of stories for everyone.

BUT BASICALLY I TRY AND EDUCATE PEOPLE ON FISH AND GET THEM TO BUY THE RIGHT FISH FOR THE RIGHT TANK!!! :woot:

sometimes it is hard to support your lfs.. especially if they are charging 50 dollars for a 4" red devil or 75 for a 2" black piranha.. you get the picture. i dont like buying anything from that one, and we only have one other lfs that sells mostly small peaceful fish and african cichlids.

The Petsmarts in my city have plenty of fish, now what they really need is to train their employees. A few weeks ago I heard one employee tell another employee not to volunteer any information that might keep the customer from buying the fish, like incompatible fish and tanks that were going to be way too small. I was disgusted. I asked a few employees what type of training that they had been given and they all told me that they didn’t have any training at all, except for one guy who actually had fish of his own. How can you be a fish specialist and have never owned any fish….?
