How many gallons would I need to keep a bull terrarium?

At least 10 gallons.

yeah, i was thinking the growout system would work well here...maybe start at 5-10g, and then work your way up to 180g, which should be fine for life. of course, if you're talking about a bull**** terrarium, you'd need a much larger enclosure, especially to house the amounts in a lot of these threads--

Hey Spatula, this will be one of the few times i am not to lazy to write an essay. But here goes:

First off all: I have never kept a gar but as a daily visiter to this site i know my things about gars. The only reason why i havent kept any is because pricing usually is very high. But i have seen many gars in tanks and i know how they swim around and act in the tank, very cool fish indeed.
But i dont think your gar really enjoys your petting, or else he would be swimming up to your hand and touching it, not the other way around.
He seems in your first video to be very dull and just floating there, and doesnt really care for the petting. (please dont say "oh yes he does" BECAUSE HE dOESNT!)

Second off all: I dont get why you think poking (which you call petting)your fish is so cool, lifting it up out of the water and stuff, i understand handfeeding and such, but you are way over the line. PLEASE EXPLANE TOO ME HOW IN THE WORLD THE FISH COULD EVER WANT TO BE PICKED UP OUT OF THE WATER!
It just doesnt make any sense.

Third of all: ALLOT is the worst english i have seen in a very long time, it is spelled "a lot". English is my second language.

Also, i never have understood your worshipness of gars in some of your posts. Gars are very neat fish i have to admit. But they dont have the best charachter of fish, they dont have the best colours, and not the most monster looking fish out there. Dont get me wrong, i would love to have a florida gar and kill for a trop.
But gars arent for the win.

POLYPTERUS ARE 4TW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck with your gator, you seem to be a legit fishkeeper exept for your need for the fish to be a dog.

i gotta agree with most of this post, however, to each their own on which fishes they like...i obviously am of the gar camp, but just for fun...

...i've kept my share of bichirs too, they definitely look cool, but i found that sticking a photo of a bichir to the back of my tank was the exact same as keeping a real one in the tank, particularly in terms of activity and personality :) --

You guys have no right to interfere in the LOVE between a gator gar and a man.. lol. Let him do whatever he thinks is good for the bonding. It is his fingers on the line, not yours.

But there is no "between" here... it is just a man with a very strong love for his gar.

Having finally just watched the video for the first time, it doesn't look like the gator has anywhere to go even if it didn't want to be held. Better for it to just accept the touching and get some food. It certainly is not radiating any type of contentment or happiness. It's just a fish sitting there, lol.

That statement right there just confirmed for me that you don't own a large Gator Gar or know much about them because TRUST ME when I tell you that if he didn't want to be held or touched he would make it VERY clear. If he didn't want contact I wouldn't even be able to get close to him. That video starts where I'm already petting him, it doesn't show how he swims up then puts all his fins back and goes into relax mode.
