JD, nice fish man. Although you seem great specimens in bare bottom all the time, and the argument is "I care about the fish, not the tank" - I guess I kinda believe a fish is more comfortable in a more natural setup.
I tried a jardini and some acestros in a bare bottom once and they were nervous and didn't like it. I find fish to be more comfortable with lots of space, but lightly aquascaped. I have natural sand, a few pieces of driftwood, and a big plant.

I havnt found fish to be nervou once they get use to it. Even my piranhas turn out to be aggresive. The S. Mac I have pictured is an absolute beast who always attack the glass and even eats from my hand. He was ascared of that monter craw though! lol
Update: I woke up this morning to find only half a monter crawfish. Just goes to show no living will live with piranha!
