Pic of my Tree and rock background.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Possibly we could use smooth-on to mold with then cast with this stuff.

Ok! I've been a little off of topic here lately so I wanted to update with some pics. This is the upper section of background with some base coats in place. This is not the finished product so colors and depth will change as I build background up. Also in these pics concrete is still wet so base colors will be much lighter when dried. Any comments welcome.:D

very nice Jawbone. What did you end up using for the paint? Looks like you didn't skim it with concrete?

Heres some close up pics to show the texture of the background. Actually I tried a mix I never used before. The background is skim coated with quikcrete Sand/Topping mix. This is a blend of portland cement and graded sand. What I like about it is the sand is a fine grade up to about a very tiny pebble. The mix does not contain gravel so it skims really smooth with texture. The product is made for skim coating from less than an inch on up. As per the instructions I added Acrylic Fortifier since my coatings will be less than an inch thick. I have used acrylic fortifier, as has many others, in tank backgrounds with no toxic effect on fish. Also I dyed the concrete mix with concrete dyes to achieve the colors you see. I've used this before in backgrounds so its safe. What I really like about this mix is it appears to retain alot of detail in the carving after coating it. Now I must stress this. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE USED THIS PRODUCT. SO PLEASE DO NOT USE IT BEFORE I CAN POST RESULTS ON THE EFFECTS OF IT IN THE TANK. THIS WILL BE THE GUINEA PIG TEST. Now after stating that I dont feel there will be any problems with it as I've used portland cement and sand in backgrounds before. Any comments welcome.:D

Heres a pic of the background today. As you can see the colors have lightened alot since the concrete dried. Now I will be coating the background and adding additional colors to the background to try to achieve more realism. I also have to start the stump too. Any comments welcome.:D

Well I think I have the rocks done. I added another layer of sand/topping mix. I also used concrete dyes to color the rocks. The green I added to give it a mossy look since this is a wet river bank area and it should look good with the real plants I'll be planting in the rock wall. I still have the tree to coat and color next. Heres the pic.
