Aloha!
I am new to this site and aquariums arent my thing, I do water gardens and my experience is with Koi (mostly longfin/butterfly) and Goldfish (longfin comets and Watonai) kept in a pond set up, as is very commonly done here in Hawaii.

A sort of strange conversation happened between some friends and I regarding the famous Koi Ponds at the Grand Hyatt resort here (they have a 2 acre lagoon filled with Koi in their gardens) and in the lagoon there, they have 3 or 4 REALLY BIG black Carp that are clearly different and MUCH larger than the Koi (I have really long legs, and these ones are longer than my 38 inch long leg, and much bigger around than my thigh... they are alost twice as big as their largest Koi). I was asked what the big black ones were but I had no idea, and neither did any of their staff.

Anyway long story short, I started looking up different kinds of Carp and found myself facinated by the photos of Giant Barb (I dont believe that they are the same kind of fish as he big black carp at the Hyatt, but they certainly did grab my attention!) and saddened by the idea that the Giant Barb are critically endangered and increasingly rare. So it got me thinking about trying to track down some, or at least some information on them. Has anyone tried keeping them in a large pond situation, and if so what kind of habits, growth rates do they have? And what kind of prices do they command?

I have this crazy idea in my head of some of these GIANT fish, fully grown comming up to the waterside and eating out of my hand like the Koi and Goldies do.

welcome.

I'm sure the ones you saw were not catlocarpio siamensis.

to make you feel better, they breed them now, so they're not as endangered. I've kept them on several occasions and currently as well. They are very shy, easily frightened, slow growing, requires constant feeding.

They pose a definite challenge to even the best hobbyists, they're tropical, probably would do best in an out door mud pond in Hawaii. Hope that answers your questions.

I don't know of any of them in the US that has successfully raised them...

what are you feeding him, great job raising him. I guess you're a pro fish keeper :)

He gobles down on Hikari sinking gold fun to watch. Thanks, no pro here ;)

FuguPuff; Many thanks, that does help. I knew the fish at the resort werent giant barb (they have elongated bodies and all the photos I find show a completely different bodyshape) I am still curious wha the resort biggies are, it was the photos I found of the giant barbs that captured my imagination.

I am curious still about the Giant Barbs though, how different are they than Koi in terms of care? I do have a large mud pond that I have used to grow out my Butterfly Koi before putting them in the display pond, so that wouldnt be an issue for me.

BassMaster:
Teriffic fish, how old is it? And whats the secret.

I love these Aquarium side shots of the fish! I have been entertaining the idea of keeping some of mine in an Aquarum just to enjoy the side views of them. :)
