I just got this D40 about a week ago. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it. I need a slave flash to get some really nice pix. I just don't have enough light, the built in flash washes out the colors, and I can't set the shutter speed any higher and still get pix. Here are a few shots that I could get:

hey. i got a d40 too. i like this thing. it works great.

you don't neccecarilly need super fast shutter for good fish shots.

A slower shutter means more exposure on the sensor, therefor more image pickup. (of course more movement so you may get blur, but unless your fish are darting around like maniacs or you have the jitters and can't hold the cam still, than you'll be fine with a 1/30 sec shutter or even less.

what kind of lens came with your cam?

Two different lenses Ed. The basic 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. An anti-vibration lens would help too.

Thanks for all the other comments guys. I'll keep posting new pics as they get better.

The VR's are great quality lenses. if your shooting anything under 100mm focal length though, IME (W) 16-85mm the Vibration reduction is useless.

for your shooting help-

1. keep your eyes out for a good micro/macro or better short zoom.

60mm micro is what i'm useing currently, or a tamron 17-50mm 2.8- Rally's been producing excellent shots with his.

2. Also look into buying a speedlight flash (Sb-600 or 800).

3. Clean the glass :D

That 18-55 is an excellent lens.. And once you figure out your settings those pics will start comin in awesome!!

What are your current settings?
