I have added rock and driftwood to my tank with no problems. I did boil all the wood for a couple of hours and the rocks for about 30 minutes before adding them to the tank though.

Plug the filter in and it will start pumping water. If this does'nt work, unplug the tank, unscrew the black cap, add water into the black pipe until you see bubbles in your tank. Screw the cap on, plug the tank into the outlet and it will start. You may want to add an additional Rena XP3 for one canister is not enough. I have 2 on my 150 gallon tank.
