I am new to MFK and this is actually my first post. I am thinking about getting a 29 gallon tank. I would like a larger one, but I have a lack of space in my apartment. My first choice for a fish would be a red tiger cichlid but I realize the tank may be a little small. I heard that it would be large enough and that the red tiger would just grow smaller. Is this true? If not, what do you recommend? Any help would be greatly appretiated!!!

:welcome: to MFK!

Honestly, for that tank size, stick with kribensis, keyholes, angelfish, rams, apistogrammas, convicts, firemouths or Lake Tanganyikan shelldwellers.

A pair of Convicts would be awesome in a 29g. The males can grow to 6" or more with the right care.

Ya a pair of convicts would be great, except ive heard they breed like crazy and I don't have a place for babies. What about one female jack dempsey? From my understanding the males only get 10 inches and the females 6-8. Any opinions on that? I would rather get a male but i realize space is limited.

dont get anything that is going to out grow your tank. a 29g is not large enough to house anything over 5-6". cons do breed easily but there are plenty other cichlids that stay small. you could do a planted tank with rams or dwarf cichlids. there are also dwarf pikes that you may want to look into that stay small. a festivus or two would fit ok aswell

Nothing large in that tank. Nothing over 6 inches. Its too cruel and unhealthy to the fish to be in a tank that size. Listen to Lupin, those are your best bet. Also be careful not to overstock.

When people say a fish wont grow big in a small tank its a lie. The fish is very unhealthy and will die as a result.

Ok, how about some help on a tank worth getting then. I have done a lot of research and fallen in love with large cichlids. What size tank would it take to house one of these without being cruel. That is the last thing I want. I will take a look at the space to put the tank and get the biggest one I can fit there. Whats the smallest tank worthy of keeping a happy large cichlid? Thank You for all your help!!!

if you want to house a JD, you'll need atleast a 55g. a 55g gives you plenty of options in larger fish but you still can't go too large. the larger the footprint of the tank the better.

Craiglist has nice tank deals. A 55g or a 75g is a good start.
