Ya a pair of convicts would be great, except ive heard they breed like crazy and I don't have a place for babies. What about one female jack dempsey? From my understanding the males only get 10 inches and the females 6-8. Any opinions on that? I would rather get a male but i realize space is limited.

I had a female JD get to way over 8". My friend that has her now says she's easily 10". A 55g will give you lots of choices for larger New Worlds cichlids. Anything up to around 10" or so would be fine in a 55g.

Welcome to MFK. Careful though, cichlids are addictive.
If you are able to go with a 55 then check into a 75 or a 90 gallon. Rather than a 48"x12" footprint you will get a 48"x18" footprint. Much better footprint for larger cichlids.

Check out German Rams they stay small and look really cool.

Could get a pair of Jewel cichlids for a 29 gal. Kinda better than cons.

If you want a red tiger Oscar a 75 gallon is a minimum for 1. Whatever tank you choose make sure not to overstock it. If you have ideas ask here 1st and people will help you out better for what will work for you. You can get help with filtration, heating and other issues.

Ask your nearby pet stores over their policies.
