so which of those protein skimmers were good?

and ive never even seen a petco with saltwater so dont complain :)

there are at least 20 w/in 10 miles of my house

last two are horrible quality...

coralife 220 skimmer for you other tank.

k ill ditch the ebay ones and go with the coralife for the bigger tank

so the internal 115 one from drs f&s is good?

and what would be the benefits of using a protein skimmer or not

Less water changes.

So basically less nitrates... I don't skim any tanks under 50 gallons. Just because water changes are so easy.

whats the easiest way to do one in saltwater?

I've heard have a day in advance: a container with the water, add prime and salt, test the salinity
pour it in the next day, if its too large use a powerhead

Right?

kinda late to the party but the stock list looks good, there are a few diff. little more expensive morays that would fit your tank on liveaquaria's divers den, but i would start with the snowflake personally since your just starting out in salt. an angler or a scorp would be awesome in your start up tank, you will want to set up a 5 gallon bucket or a rubbermaid tub to gutload some ghost shrimp in, to make sure it is healthy as an ox before you ween it onto frozen foods, there are some angler/scorp professionals on reefcentral.com in the aggressive fish only section of the forum. they would be able to tell you all the little tricks to keeping them.

I use AquaC skimmers. They are the best filters for the price.
I have always had a nasty slim on the top of my tanks that I didnt skim...even when I was "manually" skimming while doing water changes 2x a week.

You must not have ANY LFS's around you then. Thats too bad.

Also I would recommend Instant Ocean sea salt. Guess it depends on where you are from Canuck says that it doesnt work well down there, but its what everyone uses up here.
