Mine seems to be most happy with the temp set around 70. This is good for the plants too.
Tank Mates, eh, whatever you don't mind possibly turning into food. Do NOT put them with any bass or fish with a large mouth. The slim body shape of a pickerel makes them easy for such fish to eat.
I feed mine every other day, he's around 7 inches now so he devours feeders. Best idea is to set up a separate feeder tank so as to keep your Pickerel's tank free from excess ammonia.
Enjoy it, they have a ton of personality. Mine recognizes me as the food source, and thus follows me around the room. While most claim Pickerel to be inactive, mine does quite a bit of lurking around the tank. Maybe the plants make him happy.
