Picky Alligator Snapping Turtle

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I left the fish in there idk if he ate it the water is kindof dirty ish a little bit of skin here and there but no big chunks left should I assumed he ate it? I'll drop in another piece tonight. Can I feed him live fish untill he gets bigger? Like guppies, minnows, small goldfish, small crabs.

Update I saw him ripping the fish apart but idk if he really ate it, it seems as there is bits missing on the fish. Should I just keep throwing fish in there and eventually he will eat everything? Not just eat small pieces here and there and leaving a mess and maybe coming back to eat it later. Atleast I saw him eat(or I think he did, like small pieces ) I'm a bit at eased after seeing him shread that mofo!

Give your turtle some time to adjust to it's new surrounds and I'm sure it will come around. And try a variety of foods like mentioned. You can even try some feeder guppies (stay clear of feeder goldfish).

Okay thanks so much but if I feed him live he wont get hooked on it right? It would also give him a variety like you said because I would feed the guppies bloodworms and he might eat the blood worms also. So it would be silver sides, blood worms, and guppies. Could i feed squid? Or should I try that later on? And he won't get just hooked on the guppies right? How many should i start off With? 3?5?

Sorry for so many questions I just have big plans for him. He will be going in my pond. Once a good size.

Just leave in silversides or earthworms. He will scavenge when he feels comfortable and hungry. Hand feeding will only scare the hell out of a baby and make him reluctant to eat. I had troubles getting my common to eat when he was young, but apparently he ate enough, hes over 12" now. Just take out whats not eaten after a few hours or over night. Once they start feeding, there isnt many types of meaty foods that they wont eat

I wouldnt worry about him getting hooked on live. Once he starts feeding regularly and is comfortable, he'll be pretty opportunistic with feeding

You saw him working over the silverside - that's great news - just do that every other day, to keep him hungry - and you mention dirty water - you really need to keep the water clean, all the time, to maintain his health.

Thanks everyone! and to the comment about the water quality as we speak I'm doing a 50%wc right now. Also I just fed him a silver side! he only ate half though but hey he ate something! I think I'm only going to feed him half of a silver side and cut that up into 3's seems like he's having a Hardtime eating it whole.

I'll post pics but I'll have my brother ZFishies post them , I don't have the app I don't want to spend $5 for the app lol

I dont know if anyone else can comment better, but I know a few different people whose snapping turtles developed a fungus. Just a caution to be aware of
