pics of my gar catches

Theres a reason why we use unhooking mats here in the UK

there mainly used to protect the fish ie, eyes and scales

from the surrounding rocks, grass and anything else which may

damage the fishes eye's or body

i see a lot of fish which i catch which bare the markings of

poor handling meaning there eyes are scratched and there scales have been pulled

i don't mean to be a thread killer or anything but i can't understand

why anyone who is a passionate angler wouldn't use an unhooking mat

to protect the fish ? it baffles me really, I'm not saying your the only person who does this

but it does seem to be mainly US and other non European countries who do this.

although getting back to your main topic they are good catches midnight well done

mate, i'd love to catch a gar man.

oh if anyone was actually interested in the whole unhooking mat idea

you can buy these on ebay or at any local tackle shop

here's some on ebay i have found which could be of some use.

nice catches

I've handled thousands of gar, you need a chisel to take their scales off and even then its tough. Loss of the silme coat can be stressful though.

with an unhooking matt it reduces the amount of slime lost hence reducing the amount of stress the fish obtains so mats are a very good idea

Their yanks dan, they dont really care about the fish. I still cant get over why yanks have to feed live feeders to their fish?

it's standard practice over here in the uk to have an unhooking matt

and dan, never seen anyone use a mat here :irked:

don't get :irked: man i'm not insulting you, just saying i think it's a good idea in the interest of fish safety i think every angler should have one.

well sand washes off :grinno:
and where does it say slime loss = stress?
and im guessing dragging a fatty out of the water isnt good for those monsters over there.
all of a sudden no buoyancy
dragging a fish onshore "unless you have a trick i would like to hear" lol
cant be easy to hold something that big so you guys must drop them.
no ones perfect ;)
