I dont think its smallmouth cuz they have different coloration but it does look stubby like a smallmouth.
 
How big do black bass get? Now im not even sure what he is LOL....I will try to get a few more pics of him later tonight..some face shots...
 
HAHA- blackbass, spotted, and largmouth are all slightly different variations of the same fish. but from what ive seen , it looks like a black bass. expect an eventual 15 lbs avg. around 9-10 if male 15+ if female and up to 25lbs if female w/ eggs.lol.
 
Looks like a largemouth to me! Nice tank and fish, do lots of water changes and he will live a long time. Glad you cured the anchor works, alot of Northern fish have them. I have kept a bunch of them over the years. Here's a pic of one of mine. he thinks he's tropical, as you can tell by his tank mates.:) Also he looks skinny, but it's just photo, he's actually kinda chunky.

Actually," Black bass" is an old name used for the largemouth bass. Only the real old timers use that name any more.
