Don't all of those fish get to about a foot, or a little bit over, in size?
If you want a lot of movement in your tank, why don't you make it an mbuna tank? Most max out at around 4"-6". I would say you can keep about 10 in a 55. Some people overstock to reduce aggression, but since you can't commit to many water changes, I'd say don't overstock it.
Mbuna will constantly quarrel and chase each other around. They live amongst the rocks, so just make a bunch of those little rock caves you made. They're also very colorful. The only thing is you also said you want to see fish who eat other fish, and mbuna are plant-matter only. Strictly, otherwise they bloat up and die from the animal protein. Just read the
ingredients on the fish food.
I have to say though... when I was going to school (30 miles away) I had to get up at 5am and didn't get home until around 5pm (IF I left when school ended... if I stayed behind for a project, or a study group, etc, it might be 8:30 until I got home). I still found the time to do weekly 40% water changes on all my tanks. If it takes two people to do water changes with the hose, and you're home alone, or no one wants to help you, then get a five gallon bucket, and run water from the bath, like I do.
You also said you don't consider it animal abuse... but it is. I understand you didn't know... I'm not accusing you of abusing your fish
on purpose, but it was abuse nonetheless. So please, now that you know about overstocking and stunting and the dangers of high nitrates and why water changes are so important, please don't make the same mistakes of the past. Yes, big fish are cool, but not for a 55. And since you can't upgrade, don't get bigger fish... just wait until you can get a bigger tank (even if it means waiting until you move out and live on your own).
