this gets into semantics of common names, but pike-characins include all members of the family Ctenoluciidae, which includes the stupid common names of "rocket gars, slant-nosed gars, marble-line gars, marbled gars, etc".
needlefish are members of a different family (just one species really in freshwater in the trade, Xenentodon cancila).
bottom line is that pike-characins are pretty variable in pattern and coloration depending on species, but the general morphology of the body is conserved--
