Got you to look!!! (figured it would work after looking through the 9 pages of replies to the new girl yesterday!!!) Ok, want to get a Fahaka puffer. I know that some of you have them and would like to get some info.

How quickly do they grow? Have a 45 gal empty and wondering how long this size would be adequite before having to upgrade if I purchase one at 2 inches....

At monster size is a 100 gal big enough or what size would be ideal?

Also, I understand that these puffers do NOT like ANY salt... Is this true? I usually put a little salt in all my tanks and want to be certain that this is a no no......

The more input the better because I'm hoping to do this in the next week!!!!

Thanks!!!

Wondering if I post my pic if I'll get more responses........

Might get more thorough information just asking about Fahakas ;)

These lil buggers grew fast.. I thought my 2"er would be fine in a 55g for quite some time.. I think he outgrew it in about 4-5 months.

The reccomended minimum tanksize for these guys would be a 120g wide (48x24x24"), due to their larger adult size they need alot of space to turn comfortably. Please don't get fooled by your LFS telling you a 90g or a 100g long (60x18") will work, because the turning space is inadequate and it will stress your puffer out.. They really should have a 24" deep tank.

I put plain water softening salt in with my Fahaka from time to time, usually when I am doing all the other tanks. I don't do heavy dosages, and hes never reacted to it.. I believe others might of given you that word of advice as a precautionary measure, as most people are very puffer-ignorant and some even believe that ALL puffers are brackish or saltwater in someway, when a Fahaka puffer is completely freshwater. I had a PetCo guy try to tell me this once, so don't listen to everything the LFS tells you! As far as the salt, Freshwater Stingrays are completely freshwater, and they do fine with a bit of aquarium salt ;) I also used salt on my fahaka when it was small to battle a mild case of Ich!

Thanks!!! If they grow that fast maybe I should purchase a large tank first..... Figured when little a smaller tank is better cause it's easier to clean and then gradually upgrade as needed.

The Fahaka Puffer, also known as the Nile Puffer or Band Puffer, comes from the freshwater lakes and rivers of Africa and can grow to a very large size. The Fahaka is brownish-gray on the back fading to an off-white on the underbelly, with a series of lighter horizontal stripes running from the tail to the pectoral fin.

The Fahaka requires a very large aquarium with tank mates of similar size and disposition. Many plants and rocks should be included in the setup providing the Puffer with plenty of hiding places.

The Fahaka has not been successfully tank bred and little is known about their breeding habits. It is known that, in the wild, they spawn in very deep water.

Their diet should consist mainly of crustaceans such as brine shrimp, krill, mollusks, and earthworms.

Ideal tank mates include:

Puffers
South American Dwarf Cichlids (such as Rams and Apistogrammas)
African Cichlids of similar size
Plecos
Loaches
Catfish
Other fish of similar temperament and size

Right now i have sorted that where is the Picture :

She is teasing the fish heads!

I have a pic of myself on this site... and nobody was impressed... instead I meet people face to face, it seems like a better idea... until I remember my girlfriend... jk, some day I think I'd like a puffer. The fahaka ones seem popular as far as this site goes. I see mini puffers for sale and wonder if they really stay tiny. any ideas on that? I'd put them in a 10 gal.

and I admit... I looked in here thinkin there was a picture of a fully clothed girl, and in retrospect, I dont know why it would interest me to see a picture of that when I could just look in a magazine or look at a real live one on my left... that's how bad guys are, and I'm no exception, and I love it. I bet this post gets hit up 100 times today, because a real live girl posted a pic in a forum... or so it seems. sounds pathetic when you think about it. and I'm sure if anybody did this again tomorrow, I'd look.
