Dwarf puffers stay small. I have a palembangensis which gets to be roughly 8 inches from what I understand. I was told when I bought him he was full grown and he's more than doubled!!! Green Spotted Puffers are terribly cute and I believe they max out at 4 inches, although I've never seen one that big. Red-eyes I think are only suppose to get around 2 1/2-3 inches, but you have to be careful because that was what my puffer was sold as!!!

I am not a fan of puffers myself but this has come up before so here is what I have found out about the Pygmy or Dwarf puffers. All of the six species of the genus Carinotetradaodon are true freshwater species. All are sold, usually as Indian, Malabar, Gold, or Dwarf puffers. A 10G tank or even a 5G is plenty big.
The largest is the Red-eyed puffer (C. loreti) which gets to 2 1/2". (pic by Nonn Panitvong).
The smallest, and most commonly sold, is the Malabar puffer (C. travancoricus) which only gets to 1 1/2". (pic by Ott, G.). All of them are fin nippers.
The lower pic is the Red-eyed puffer.

that red eye puffer looks great... I'll set up a 10 gal. puffer tank I think.

I'd go for it. I like them a lot all though that is my personal opinion. They take no prosoners when it comes to eating..... Matter of fact, I have to be careful how much I feed mine cause I honestly think he'd eat till he blew up.....

It's done, and my girlfriend is already givin me **** about it. I'm bringin my 10 gal. home from work. Can you post pics of your puffer tanks to show me what kind of setups you make?

Supposedly sand is better for them because they suck when they eat and may take in gravel. I must warn you though....... The sand isn't fun to clean!!!! For a 10 gal your all right though!!!!

I planned on using sand because I never had before, and figured with a 10 gal. tank it could be a pretty good way to learn. I have no idea how to get it prepped, and how to do regular cleanings with it. Also, I'm curious as to what kind of filter I should get for it.

I'm just using a normal filter. The sand does get sucked out when you clean but because it is so fine I focus on just skimming the top..... It's not like the gravel where particles work there way down. I know that with puffers you don't want them to take in air so unlike my other tanks I don't have undergravel filters or heavy filtration. Just regular maintainence which should be easy in a 10 gal. Keep in mind though that I'm learning as I go..... Despite my log-in name I'm not an expert....YET!!!! :)
