Pike ID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hahaha, well maybe they are going to turn more red in the future.....Could also be male Cobra's with that head shape....actually, they might be because males dont get as bright as the female and cobras have that bulky look to them....I dont know, im sure someone will chime in with an answer.

I'm pretty sure we can rule out cobra pike males....My buddy grew these fish from small, and he would've mentioned that they looked stunning as young fish  David

hahaha, alright, well if they were bland when young, we can rule out a few fish....Ask him what kind of pattern they had when younger......If it was a spotted and stripped pattern on the head could be a ven or strig or some kind, if not, hummm, more digging i guess.

He's the one convinced they're sp. venezuela, though he has nothing to base that on other than comparing them to pictures..
I emailed some pictures to Vinny Kutty, and he's saying sp. atabapo..
If it turn's out they're male and female(which seem's a little doubtful right now since they're looking like two females) and they breed, then I'll be a little more worried about exactly what they are when I have to have an ID to submit them for BAP at my local fish club...
Alot of if's :grinno: David

Would agree with Kutty ~ some kind of lugubris sp. atabapo! Similar head shape and caudal blotch marking, def. not cobra or tapajos I. Photo below is our male - notice head, red eyes, etc. Try something else in their diet, maybe some vitamins, to see if their washed out color improves. At 12" size I'd say you have two males - just don't see enough white in their dorsals.

Nice Fish!!(your's)
One has a little more white in the dorsal than the other...But then I have the advantage of looking at the fish, not my pictures...They get along really well, which is why I had hoped I had one of each...David

I thought it had that Atabapo look to it earlier.......Maybe that's what it is.

Here's what they looked like when they were small - around 5" give or take. Please forgive the quality, that was my old p/s canon. Hope this will help with the ID, I always wanted to know what they were exactly.
