Here's what they looked like when they were small - around 5" give or take. Please forgive the quality, that was my old p/s canon. Hope this will help with the ID, I always wanted to know what they were exactly.

This is interesting because I'd venture a guess that 90% of the people here would have ID'd those juveniles as Cr. sp. "Venezuela" which they most definitely are not.

At this point I'm leaning towards a geographical variant of Cr. lugubris. Unless we know where they were collected from we may never have a definitive answer.

Oh, and both look like males but they do look stressed.

Thanks, David got all my Pikes before the new camera showed up, I guess that I'll have to go to his place to shoot them more.

Hey Scat, due to those Juvi pics and the now adult pics, would you consider that they may be a variant of the Cren. Strigata? The Juvi pics looks like they could be......

Here's a picture of some strigata that I just took(the fish is around 7 inches or so)...My apologies for the quality, I have some satanoperca in there as well that are stirring up the substrate...David

No, I'm pretty sure not. Strigata have a fairly well developed humeral blotch which is occelated which neither the juveniles nor the adults exhibit. I'm sticking with my original assessment that they are a geographical variant of Cr. lugubris.

Regarding this pic

Again, no hint of a humeral blotch whatsoever. It is a young fish and it may develop later on but I'm still a little dubious that it's strigata. Guess we'll see. You'll have to keep us posted with updates over the coming months. Do you know where it was collected?

My point being with the original fish in this post, buying what you think is a common fish may garner you a spectacular specimen when adult. It also just shows how muddy the business of ID'ing juvenile pikes is! :WHOA:

I don't know where the "strigata" were collected..I can try and find out... I've got 8 of them, and they all appear to be the same species David
p.s. I'll try to get more/better pictures as well

interesting post man....Keep us posted on these if you have the time so we can watch the developement of them to see what it is they really are.....Variant of Cr. Lugubris huh Scat? Very interesting.
