Pike Questions...

JD get large, bigger than most people realize, so a 75gal would a be better idea. Puttin pikes and other cichlids together in a smaller tank can work, but you can have problems.

Bigger fish in smaller aquarium........Not a good Idea..... A 40 breeder is a nice little tank for breeding.....cheap water changes!!, but keeping any fish that pushes 10 inches into a 36x18 rectangle is like putting you in a 4'x8' cell. Sure you could do fine on your own, for a while. but now add someone else into your cell.... gets a little crowded, you feel uncomfortable. Then you get into fights with people you normally wouldn't. So take it how you will, cause in the end your gonna do what you want to.

He has put up a good point, but the main reason I'd advise you against it is because pumpkin seed are a native, NONTROPICAL fish. They don't really appreciate the warmer water conditions that the Crenicichla and other SA/CA or any tropical fish that you have. Average comfortable temp. range for them is around 72 degrees, much more than that and it gets a little bit uncomfortable. Tropical fish that cool aren't nesseccarily in danger, but its not a party for them either. They come from way different areas, different water parameters, temperatures, and environment...so really, mixing native with nonnative isn't a good idea.

Sorry, but still 10" fish in a small box. Aggression will be WAY HIGH. My Johanna is a Juvi, and a more peaceful pike cichlid, only about 4", it constantly goes after other cichlids it sees as a threat to it's area. And my Johanna's area @ 4" is about 60 gals of my 120 gal tank. So my advise is no go, get a bigger tank if you want more then just the Sveni.

How much bigger? (gallons and demensions)

Depends on the amount of space you have. To keep it with other fish, and make it more comfortable I would say 75 gal. 48x18 footprint. It will give you a little more options with this fish. But for even better choices go for a 125. A 125 will also let you go for larger pikes. But like in my case, I couldn't do a 6' tank, but I could a 5', so I got a 120 gal. I can keep large pikes, but I feel it is best to keep only one pike. But I can use other fish like Severums and GT's as dither and aggression outlets. It is really amazing how one foot of space can change how a pike acts, and how other fish make it feel. Before I added the GT, no aggression whatsoever. After, the Pike @ about 4" wants about 4 foot of the tank. Since you want a smaller species, I would say a 4 foot tank would be good, as long as it is 18" wide. Plus at 18" wide you have more room for decoration and moe hiding spots for all involved in the aquarium.
