I normally use half dose salt and half dose parasite clear. I have had a lot of luck with this treatment as long as the symptoms are caught early.
hmmm wondering if I should give this a shot. Ive been doing a 70% water change every 48 hours for 6 days (three times now...) and running diatom for 12 hours a day. If I see signs of it tommorow ill give this a shot. I have parasite clear but im partial to paraguard from seachem which one should I use with the salt ?

if it's been a week and still the same, then i'd give meds a try. I use Jungle Parasite Clear, and haven't used Seachem Paraguard before, so i can't compare them based on my own experience. i've used parasite clear with salt, so that's not a problem.

Looking at their ingredients, they're quite different. I use parasite clear because it contains praziquantel which makes it a good med for external and internal parasites. Paraguard seems to be more for external stuff only, but its other ingredient might give it some antibacterial properties (but for mild cases only imo), which wouldn't hurt in your case since we aren't sure what's causing the redness.

anyway, thats my 2 cents. hard to say for sure which one will work better, so its up to you.

Well given that I have parasite clear and you have the experience ill go with your recommendation ! Thanks again for the input. If it isn't showing any better Tomorrow then off goes the UV out goes the purigen :( And in goes the meds :(

yeah start medicating if it's not showing improvement.

just to clarify though, i have experience using parasite clear to clear parasites, not for what's happening to your bichir. the antibacterial property in paraguard may be helpful since we don't know what's causing it. as long as it's not getting worse and your bichir's not negatively affected by it, you have time to try different things, so if you have parasite clear, by all means.

you sure there's no signs of tiny flukes on the belly?

if you're so incline, another thing you could try in combination with either parasite clear or paraguard is to take the fish out and put some neosporin on the red area as an antiseptic. apply liberally. i'm not sure how big the bichir is so it may be easier said than done haha

Not sure what flukes would look like. He is about 13-14" so I don't want to wrestle the guy too much lol I bet I could take him if I wanted too though ;)
Seems the same but not getting worse. Ill wait another 24 hours :(

I have no use Seachem paraguard but I have used Jungle Parasite Clear and API medicines. So far the one that work best for me is parasite clear. I recommend to go half to three quarter dose unless you want to gamble with full dose. Does your bichir infection look anything like this?

No , If your referring to the infection near that poor guys dorsal (Correct terminology ?) area. Its more just like he has pink/ red stripes on his belly doesn't seem to have affected his scales either yet...

flukes are tiny, kinda transparent, short hair-like parasites sticking out from the bichir's body. CDM posted some great pics of them on here before. normally hard to spot, but easier to see from certain angle with the lights. anyway if you don't see anything on the body, then nah it's not flukes. i just wanted to make doubly sure is all haha

Yeah I definitely don't see anything like that. Since its a poly only tank the lighting is rather subdued so I don't know if I would see them anyway would I ? I observe them quite a bit.... pink color seems to have shrunken a bit actually I am not sure why.. Couldn't be a bad thing though. I have to go help on another job for a week so ill be gone for 7 days... Crappy timing I know so hopefully nothing bad happens while I am away :(
