Pink Convicts

Running out of ideas!

Add another small male and female. You just don't have a pair yet. Expect 1-2 fish casualties if you're not paying close attention and remove the non-breeding pair quickly. Competition drives convicts. Once there's another male/female in the tank, the dominant 2 will pair off and get about their business.

Convict Cichlids, the fact that they're in a split 10g on the other side of a fish they "know" will tear up their fry is enough to keep things from working. Given the fact you're planning to toss pond fish in a 55, step back and realize that even in a 55g, a breeding pair of convicts will eventually claim 90% of the tank, usually regardless of what's in their way. They'll still abuse and kill fish 3x their size, if they don't submit and hug the opposite wall, assuming they're in the mood.

They'd more than likely breed in the 10 if they were alone. Even then, fry would suffer if they decided to spawn again. You simply need more room.

they finally breed this week, had a good bunch of eggs 30-40, unfortunately that was cut down to about 20-25 wigglers, and only about 8-10 free swimmers, and then there were 0 the next morning ... but at least theyre trying, hopefully next time !

Looking for Convicts

I split my breeding pair up because I did not want to get overrun with convicts. I have 4 fry left from the 4th batch, and everyday I feed my male con 2 or 3. I upgraded to a 40 breeder, and he loves it. All the extra room he is probably in heaven!

Probassfisher, are you certain that's a male? I only ask because I see orange blotches on the side?

Yeah it is, it's rare for males to have the orange blotches, but it can happen, thats why I want to breed him! Look at the fins, and the head for the 100% sex. The bottom one is usually as pointy and elongated as the top, but it got nipped off.
