I know a few here keep them, I find them very interesting.

I would like to know, if I could keep one with a Jack Dempsey in a 55 gallon? I have not aquired the Jack Dempsey yet but it will be atleast 3'' the Chalceus I'm looking at buying is about 6''.

Any hints/tips or pictures? Awesome fish they are.

they are skittish... really skittish. Found better as single or in larger groups of other Chalceus, two or three don't do as well. There are a few species I think. Sorry not to sure about the JD

Yeah, Read that they do better singely.

The tank at the LFS it is kept with two silver dollars, and a wide variety of loaches, aswell as some gouramis. It seems to do quite well it isnt that skiddish, It will even follow my finger if I move it across the glass!

I asked an LFS employee about keeping them with the JD and he said it should work if the JD isnt very agressive. So I think I may try it. vanimate kept his with jardini, and only one died so I may aswell try it.

I have mine living with a Frontosa that killed a friend's pleco so he gave it to me. I'd say it was pretty aggressive (the Frontosa).

He was buddies with this Cigarfish, till it jumped out (with the lid on!).

I think I'm going to get it!
Theyre like Mini Red Tail Payaras. I'm not sure If I'm going to get a JD, I'll see whats at the LFS. I really like the Chalceus though, they have some decent sized teeth, the one at my LFS swims with his mouth slightly ajar at times and I can see his teeth are pretty big.

I have read they do good as a single fish or groups of 5 or 6. I want 6 of them for my new tank, last night I was pricing them found one place where 6 would cost about 80 dollars or more. I also found them on google searching for pink tailed chalceus videos and found a couple of videos on them, you try this too and save in your favorite places.

Youtube has a video with 2 of them, very interesting IMO too. Unexpectantly they do not move that much but sort of hover with other big fish, gars etc. They hang out in the top 1/3 of the tank, I would say almost exactly 1/3 the way down from the top, nose very slightly higher than the tailfin, they do hover near each other, like each others company. When you go to google and find the youtube video there is other links you can click on, one of them another chalceus video, I find them both very interesting to check out.

That's interesting... normally they constantly swim. If you get it remember your friends at MFK want pics!

I didnt get a chance to go to the LFS :(
Hopefully I can by tommorow.

davo, you have one correct? Did you ever have it in with any of your plecs? I've got a sailfin and a common in the 55 right now, may be re-homing them to a friends koi pond soon though.

The one I plan to get seems quite mellow, as I said its kept with CL and various other loaches, some silver dollars, two large angels, and a bunch of gouramis.

Not certain on getting the JD, Might be getting a nice Barred Midas...

55g will not be large enough to house an adult chalcius. Mine is in a 125g now.
