Pink Tail Chalceus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bump! I have 2 in a 240G, with cichlids, gourami, lots of plecos. They can be skittish. I thought they were going to kill themselves in the 20G quarantine that I had them in for a week, kept smashing into heater and HOB filter. And when they want to move, they can do so incredibly quickly -- from one end of the tank to the other in less than a second. But they are peaceful, don't bother anyone else, and they usually are handing out next to each other facing opposite directions (like Bosemani rainbows do at night).

LOL I suck at takin pictures. I not sure why it looks like crap floating in the water its bubbles from my HOB filter dumping on top of him. I scared him tryin to take pics. he.s pretty skittish yet and not eating still. just got him or her yesterday. I had 6 of these in the 90's and remember them goin nuts pickin off feeder crickets from the top of the water. all my old high school buddies used to come over on sunday mornings to my house for hangover breakfasts and watch me feed the pink tails the stingrays and the big snakehead. I also kept 2 freshwater barracudas in with the pink tails. they were really cool fish too. they were all in separate tanks except the pink tails and barracudas were in 1tank together

I keep one in my 75 with cichlid. He is cool looking with torpedo body shape, staying motionless in the upper water column resembling a gar. I purposely keep a solo one as a group of them will fight one another unless you have a huge tank. I have seen foot long PTC in public aquariums so even a 200 gal is small for a group.

There are two species of PTC go by the same common name, one has a pointed nose, red on the body, and a predator look. The other has a blunt nose, yellow ventral fins, and a cigar shape. I keep and prefer the former one.

ya I like the yellow fins in that pic of ur link. I just keepin him solo. he s in a 25gal quarantine tank for now. I gonna set up a 60gal during the holidays with just a little river gravel and a few pcs of driftwood and or a small branch low along the bottom. he can slide in there when its fully cycled. throw in a small bristle nose pleco or something maybe
