PIPA PIPA FROGS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To keep them healthy, DO NOT feed them daily. Every other day is fine for them and more than they usually get in the wild. Their systems are simply not geared to be digesting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Ok last night the biggest Pipa frog tried to eat my black ghost knife! i saved him just in time and transfered him to another tank!
Now i got 2 more Pipa Pipa frogs in hope to breed them! I have 3 ac70 filters, is that to much current for these guys. I have 5 all over 6 inches and they are very messy. Whats a good tankmate, a huge rhapiel cat i was thinking to clean up a little.
Anybody can describe the perfect setup for these guys i would appreciate it so far they are all in a 60 gallon with a thin layer of natural small gravel, 3 ac70's packed with substrate and filstars, full amazon river setup with lots of plastic reptile vines and a little drift wood on one side going towards the top of the tank. I have some guppies living in there and have been trying silversides and dried krill and a few have started to eat. thnkas in advance everybody hope to get some babies from this setup. Will 3 ac70's handle the bioload, i was thinking to add an xp3 this week and really take care of thgis tank!

WHAT???!!!! Don't tell me someone actually thought to put pipa pipa frogs in with fish!!

You know, sometimes it's actually worth a few minutes to read the crap I post.

From page 1:

"Like many other species of frogs, Pipa pipa is an effective predator with a voracious appetite for a wide variety of prey items. The elongated fingers are held in front of the frog's face and are used to rapidly pull food into the mouth. The food is then passed directly to the stomach. Often these frogs remain motionless for several minutes to hours, waiting for the ideal moment to ambush their prey. Then, without warning, they lunge forward with a burst of activity that can only be described as explosive, and gulp down their meal. By observing captive specimens eat, one can also notice a small current of water being expelled from the frog's mouth after the prey is swallowed. Wild caught specimens have been known to consume a wide variety of fish, including some of considerable size in proportion to the frog's body. In 1978, Bill Duellman reported a 78mm long specimen from Santa Cedlia, Ecuador having consumed two fish -- an Erythrinus erythrinus (Erthrinidae) 30mm long and a somewhat smaller pimelodid catfish (Duellman, 1978)."

"In September of 2000, 1 acquired a group of three specimens. I placed all three of them in a 35 gallon aquarium with a pea gravel substrate, filtration, and various freshwater plants. I then added three dozen goldfish and watched the action. Like gladiators thrown before the lions, the unsuspecting fish never stood a chance. By the next morning every fish was gone and the frogs floated near the surface with noticeable bulges in their stomachs."

Oddball i try to read everything you post on these forums and have lots of respect for you. I mentioned in my first post the frogs were going into my amazon river setup with my huge black ghost knife. Everybody at the pet store said it would not be a problem since the host is huge and very thick. I was lucky and was constanly watching the tank and when the frog made his move on my ghost i transfered the ghost to his new tank. I really thought with the ghost huge size the frog would not try anything! Lessoned learned and thanks again for all your help guys!
