Piranah with bichirs

Ive seen it done on occasion with olecos and armored cats....would bichirs be a possibility?

No.

This comes from experience. Don't do it. Half eaten bichirs are not a pretty site. I have kept 5 different species of piranha and it wouldn't work with any of them.
 
NO, NO, NO....I had a pleco in with my rbps and it came up missing one day. They had never even looked at him then, bam, he was gone.
 
Piranhas are piranhas why would u want another species of fish with it? Their bad *** by themselves!

What size tank would one need for 8-12 rbp? What is an appropriate size shoal?

A good general number is 20gal per piranha, but that doesn't mean 1 p would be a good in a 20. That being said Imo a 180gal is a minimum for 8 pygos and for 12 a 200gal atleast!

Generally a decent shoal starts off at 5 and for some reason p keepers think odd numbers are better, I've had a shoal of 6 and 5 didn't really see a difference.

You have to remember that red bellies can hit 8-10" on avg, imagine a dozen of those, they will create more poop then you!
