need a piranha for my 55 gal. Preferably one I can keep in there for life.

You could do a small group of red bellies, like 3-5. I'm not sure which of the diamond varieties stay small enough, but I know you could house a rhom in there for a long time before needing an upgrade.

I had red bellies in there. But today when I turned on the light they (2 of them) were dead. Ive had them for over a year. The only thing I can think of is I gave them some trout 2 days ago. Other then that the tank was clear and they were fine last night. They had no fin nips or anything. So I am redoing the tank right now. Will have it up and running again tonight all clean, with fresh water. I'll let it sit for a few weeks and restock it with something new.

most people say a 75g is too small for a shoal of RBP's, much less a 55g. A 55g is only 12.5" wide. RBP's can get up to 12". Would you put four 12" fish in a 55g? Some of the pygo peeps would know better than me but I believe a 125g is recommended minimum for 4 rbps.

Another good option would be S. sanchezi. Could live in there for life no problem. Most serras grow slowly enough that you could keep one in the 55g for a long time.

Yeah I agree, a 75 gal could hold only 3 full grown rbps and they would be cramped in there.

What do you guys think about elongs?

You could definitely start one off in there, but elongs are pike piranhas. They're made for swimming high speed and they're really active. They're also long. I wouldn't try to raise one in anything smaller than a 50g breeder. 75g is ideal.

They're also one of the coolest looking and most aggressive piranhas. The black mask color morph is awesome!

yeah, I was thinking of putting in another 60 gal filter and 2 power heads if I was to get one. My red bellies just were not aggressive and very skittish. Which is how most red bellies are. I know a wider tank would be ideal but could I get by with a 55 gal. Also do you know if they are fast or slow growers?

To name a few
Serrasalmus Sanchezi, Elongotus, Irritans
