I'm no expert in the field of evolutionary biology or anything, but didn't all life originate in the oceans?

I thought we are all seeded by the impact of a meteorite many many many moons ago...Could be totally wrong by I think I read something like that somewhere a while back. we are all Aliens....:nilly:

Maybe so, but this paper suggests that piranhas came much later than the original emergence and evolution of life from the ocean. They were once marine fish that evolved to survive and thrive in freshwater and are now stenohaline fish, much like the river stingrays of the Amazon.

gotcha. It is fascinating. Matter o' fact, IMO the only interesting thing about rift lake cichlids is the whole story of one species of fish trapped in the lake when the sea receded, and all the african cichlids speciated from that one species.

I didn't know that. That's very similar to the situation in the Amazon for the piranhas and stingrays.

Weird. Well they are characins, and as far as I know that's not how other characins evolved.

I personally don't find enough compelling evidence to confirm this theory.
