Not only is it not necessary but it can allow some pretty nasty diseases to be in direct contact with your P. I hope that if you decide to get a Piranha in the future you will learn a lot more about them, so you dont end up one of those people who buys one thinking their buying a "blood thirsty fish" and then dumps in a lake when its not...
As for your RBP losing color, there isn't enough information for us to say.
How big is your tank, what kind of lighting are you using(is it on, if so how long), how much cover do you have(can we see a pic), what are your levels(Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate), and when did they start losing color(did you start doing something different).

I only ever heard about it, and I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to stand someone doing that if I could stop it.
I've got a carnivorous fish. She doesn't eat many live fish either, and it's always so quick. Really it's nice to see someone treating them so well. I'm sure a lot of them that are taken home end up suffering quite a bit, so I'm glad these guys ended up with you. Well done.
ballinouttacntrol;3920810; said:can't they just get the same care and food that your OTHER carnivorous fish gets? Your friend was pretty much uneducated for even feeding them pond goldfish in the first place. I hope that's not what you're feeding your fish too
Great looking tank btw. I remember your original set up and when people were giving you a hard time about the skull
