Probably will take heat for posting this here. But this is the only part of the forum that i use for the most part and its for my piranhas tank. I am setting up a new 55 gallon next week. and i want to make it look as great as possible. some of you have perfected this. I really want black sand or gravel because most of you say it makes their colors stand out. so if someone could point me in the right direction....and even how much i need. also i saw somewhere of someone having black stones that was nice. thanks alot guys

stone is WAY easier to wash before you put it in your tank. Sand looks great but you have to be carefull what kinda filters you use. If using sand stay with canisters. You can use HOBs but some people have peoblems with them sucking up sand and eating the impellters. If you use gravel I have found that estes' has some of the best looking black. Estes' also has great looking sand (I have both Estes' sand a gravel) But I have found for a normal layer of sand it's about 35-45lbs of gravel and about 40 of sand. Whichever you are doing.

Also how many Ps you got. They can stay in a 55 for a long time but not comfortably for life since it's only a 12" wide tank. A 75gal. is better. But not nessisary right off the bat.

Also on a side note If you can find 3M Color Quartz. BUY IT!!! it is hard to find at least where I am from but it is some of the best looking "sand" many of us have ever seen.

Hope this helps if you got anything else feel free to PM me of just ask again.

I have 60lbs of white Caribsea Moon sand in my 55g and have no problem with it. I run an Eheim 2215 and a AC 70 on the tank and haven't had any issues.

I love the look of the sand, very clean, if you decide to go black sand, I recommend Tahitian Moon Sand. You can buy it online many places like petsmart.com, you can get 60lbs fairly cheap is you search for coupon codes too. I got my sand through petsmart for under $50 shipped with coupons.

I have to say the white sand also brings out the red bellies of my RB's very nicely. The black also would be nice, just personal preference I guess.

good luck,
Joe

ya i dont have a canister. i will just have a regular old filter. ya i know ill adventually have to upgrade. i have 3 piranhas. but they are babies still. i have to gradually get bigger tanks cuz the wife hates that this is my hobby hahah

What you do is upgrade to a 75 for te 3 b/c that is a good number to have in a 75. then tell her she can do whatever she wants with the 55. and before you know it you'll have like 500gal. of water in your house like me. lol Get the ladty interested and you are home free.

The only downside is she wants a ring before she'll let me get a 300+gal. (and I know a guy who has a 565 for sale AHHHH! lol She's worth it.)

reviews of the Tahitian Moon sand says that its hard to maintain and it gets in filters. i dont wanna wreck my filters lol. ugh i want my tank to look spectacular!!

this is the brand that I have in my tank is is fantastic!!! it is pitch black sand and it is heavy yet extremely fine, you where asking me what I used in my tank and this is it, I run two emporer 400's no canister for my 90G and have no problems, this is what you need and will make your tank very vary sharp looking, do a very detailed cleraning of the sand before it goes in the tank and then pour it all onto one side of the tank, then pour your water in on the other side of the tank where there is no sand, after it is full then spread the sand out, if you have water in the tank all ready just put the sand in very slowy. like I said I wouldn't go with anything else other than this!!!! heres the link for what I have and a pic of the bag. Good Luck...
