Ok I'm thinking of getting some red bellies because I have been fascinated with them for a while. I read that if cornered they will bite. How are you supposed to clean the tank without the fish removing some skin?

Well I've never owned any but my aunt did and I cleaned the tank and they always bite not even just when cornered but always. They will bite no matter what. They draw blood as well and they have special gloves you can buy for aggressive aquarium fish they are like $20 from I think that pet place and if you don't use that expect to be bitten! They are very vicious! So you will most likely be bitten sooner or later. Good luck and they need huge tanks for a school

After having owned just about every availble freshwater fish the only one that that kept me out of the tank was the Aimara. I have never been bitten by any piranha. That being said, I do keep my eye on my Black Diamond when Im in his tank, but he has never gone after me yet.

I would suggest that it's more about how you approach the situation. I put my whole arm in, not just my finger tips! I bet you could get them to nibble if you did it right, but I doubt they would go for you if you confidantly put your enitr hand or arm in there.

They hide in a corner when you clean the tank, if you move your hand towards them they freakout and move to another corner..

I have a shoal of 5 5-6" rbp. I have a 24" tank height and have never even flinched with my arms in it, i clean, scrap glass, net food, vac and siphon and never even close, they are like dogs too me, they will hide when something enters the tank. I always make sure mine are properly fed and i think thats the key!

Hope you get some man, by far best fish ive ever owned!

I had eight large red bellies for a while. I always stuck my whole arm in the tank while cleaning/moving rocks around. Red bellies are pretty skittish, and they always just darted away from my arm when sticking it into the tank.

When catching them to sell them, I, like an idiot, put my hand above the net to keep one from flopping out. I instictually do this with all fish, but don't do it with Piranhas! This was the result of that careless act:

Yes! I use a 1'x1' piece of fiberboard to cover the top. Crazy man, theres a dude on here that did the same but it cracked his nuckle cap on his finger, believe it was a rhom tho

red bellies shouldn't be anything to worry about for the most part. like already stated, they're pretty skittish and will get as far away rom you as possible if your in the tank. rhoms or other types i couldn't tell you, but for red bellies, i'd assume your pretty safe.

upon doing a tad bit more research like you're doing right now you'll learn that red bellies are nothing to be scared of when well taken care of
