these were grew out from babies, took 8 years I think.
The biggest piraya just got murdered recently tho, sux....

those are big boys, do you know any measurments on them?

the big piraya that died was almost 18" and the smaller one is 11in, the caribe is pushing 16in, not sure about the tern. they also had an other piraya in there til couple years ago then they moved it out. that fish is now 14".

The caribe i removed from the tank was acting weak so i understand why he was attacked , but the one i left in the 300 was healthy as ever, swimming perfectly not a mark on him, and then next day half his body is torn up, i think this was murder..... the piraya knew he was all by himself without his friend so they moved in.

Sounds like prison culture! Stick to your kind. safety in numbers. don't excessively mingle with other kinds. jump in if anything pops off involving your kind. don't follow those rules, your own kind will pick you off.

And of course, never snitch

End of that discussion.

As for the pirayas, sorry to hear they wreck such havoc. For sure, they are no lambs ... What's your set-up? Do you offer hiding spaces and areas that are out of sight from other areas? I still have 5 of my original 6 pirayas, and I noticed that they need their own private space... and I have been feeding daily until they are full (involves a lot of leftovers, but I prefer to remove dead tilapia over fishing out dead piraya). Just recently they have been skipping meals for a day or two, they are about 18 months old now.

thanks it really sucks.. the tank is 8ft by 30 inches i think its a regular 300. as for hiding they have some driftwood and floating plants on one side of the tank and just open space on the other, should i add more hiding places? there isnt really any good spot where a fish can hide its whole body. i now feed every day .

i had 3 caribe ( with deformed eyes since they were small ) in a big tank and added up a single caribe ( perfect eyes ) that i separated months ago with the same size. in a few days it's tail got all biten up and i have to separate it again.

I have also seen piraya act like snake heads, where they kill indiscriminately whether there hungry or not, it's like they enjoy killing things.

OP, I'm very sorry for your loss.. must say I seldom come to these parts of town (the pirahna section) but when people dedicate big tanks to these fish that they know they must keep sp tanks it earns my respect!

uhm? you have seen them act like snakeheads? since you are in the states I have a pretty hard time seeing how you can compare them to snake heads. me on the other hand have kept a variety of the big, pissed of channas. micro/pleuro/auranti/marulioides etc with other fish for years.. I don't want to start b1tching in someone elses thread but since the pirahna folks and the channa folks are experiencing pretty much the same problem, the fishs' bad reputation and through that bans/restrictions.

I looked it up for the sake of it so I wouldn't step on anyones toes, you mentioned your dad's house (I'm 23 myself and no expert in any way) so I guess you are too young to have had snake heads before the ban and therefore you aren't speaking from personal experience. They aren't worse than any other big pred really and speaking of how bad they are won't help the fish and the responsible keepers at all.

remember, I say this humbly.
