Yes they are expensive but considering they are rare and hard to find in the fishpet market, I would pay that ammount, but that's me i love piranhas.

A 180g would deffo fit you 4 piraya for life, but If I were you I'll get myself something smaller for their time being little, maybe 35gal would do for some months.

The Idea is you can take care of them easly in this size than in a 18ogal. since they are 2"-3" they are gonig to get lost in that inmensity plus a 35 gal. would enable you to a better care control and a better feeding control for the littels.

I would keep them in the mentioned tank and then, when pirayas are bigger, lets say 6" -8" I would change them to the 180gal.

I feed my reds with Minnows, caryfish, squid fillet, raw shrimps and beeffheart mainly. Avoid meat, chicken, liver, salmon. It is not practical to feed them with that.

You can do the same with piraya. juts be careful with life feeders, be very aware not to feed them ill life feeders.

This is an example of how the idea of a 35 gal works for the time your piraya are little.

Imagine you feed them minnows and one of them had the ich and you piraya get infected. The 35 gal enables you a better medication and later a partial change of water in an easier way.

Imagine what it would be to treat a desease in a 180gal?.

You can use as a decor some mangler roots, well rounded stones like river stones avoiding sharp or abrasive stones. You can use a mix of natural/plastic strong plants trying not to overcrowd the tank with decor or plants. Piraya grow pretty big and need plenty of space but also need some spaces to hide.

Cheers.

unfortunatly i only have a 180g so i wont be able to grow them in a smaller one

nah i would totally stick with the 180. They may be a little lost in there for a while, but they'll also grow faster and a larger tank is more stable than a smaller tank which means more of your piraya will survive into adulthood. Also because piraya are the most cannibalistic of the pygos, 180 will give them plenty of room to get away from one another and may mitigate the desire to kill each other. I would plant the tank. Invest in a good high nutrient substrate and get some amazon biotope plants. Driftwood is also a good idea. Look up takashi amano (sp?) for more info on aquascaping a planted tank, and if you get tired of watching your little shoal of piraya swimming around in that giant tank, buy a shoal of tetras. Neons or cardinals would be sick to watch, and may even breed in a 180. The occasional one will probably be picked off, but they're cheap so who cares. Stick with the 180g and you'll be glad you did.

Rememmber that 35gal thing was just an advice an own expirience recommendation but it is not a must.

Of course if you dont have the possibility to do that, sure you can do all the way long with the 180gal as Diogenes has told you.

Cheers.

I guess it's pretty obvious I want one of these, you're like the third member I've recommended it too. If I recommend another one I'm gonna start chargin' aquascape a commission:

put that in your setup and that tank is gonna start to look like like a public zoo...

Also I noticed on aquascape that 3.5" piraya are going for 125.00 on there. I guess 90$ is not a bad deal.

P's like whitefish. Don't know why salmon would be contraindicated but everybody says stick to whitefish. I don't see why a little salmon would be a problem though.

lol cuz i can catch salmon and whitefish for free here in MI. well this spring i need a license but you get the point
