this seems to be a question that comes up all the time on all the piranha forums and I'll answer it as succinctly as I can.

There are two kinds of fish you can keep in a piranha aquarium.

1. piranhas- a shoal if they're all pygos or Serrasalmus geryi, or an individual if they're an other Serrasalmus species.

2. food- any other species of fish becomes a feeder, unless you count stuff like Arapaima gigas.

Thats pretty much it. Other people will tell you they have a pleco, or a raphael cat, or tetras, but I've personally had no success and lots of other piranha keepers will tell you the same. The only thing I have heard of kept with piranhas with any success were small tetras with huge (16"+) piranhas. Supposedly the tetras are too fast and not worth the trouble to a monster piranha. Anything else is food sooner or later.

Hey Baho and hello to the rest of the members,

I've been on this board for a while but this is my first post. I've been keeping piranhas for about 20 years so I think I can help you here. First Piraya are always wild caught and until about five years ago were very difficult to obtain.Anyway $90.00 for a 3" specimen is fair so go for it!

Forgive me if I rehash some stuff here.

One piece of advice I would give you is to make sure you get four or more fish. I currently have three 2" piraya which is normally a recipe for disaster but it's only temporary. I intend to pick up a couple more soon and put them in a larger tank. When you have three fish one is ALWAYS singled out and killed eventually.Having four or more fish tends to balance things out.

DO NOT feed your piraya beef heart as its primary food. Beef heart should be a treat for them every now and then. When you do feed them the beef heart make sure you trim the fat off. You can go to the market and pick up talapia fillet, cat fish nuggets, shrimp etc. If they take pellets great ,a varied diet is the important thing.

Piranhas are extremely nervous fish especially when small so floating plants and dim lighting are a great idea because it mellows them out.The other thing I would recommend is putting them in the largest tank you can. I believe the rule of thumb is 40 gallons per fish.

Good luck!

welcome to MFK monty. thanks for the advice.

aight peace

Thanks for the link that is a beautiful tank and I believe would house a shoal of almost any P's.

I bought a Piraya from Oliver Lucanus in 1997 and still have it and 2 others I obtained in 2006 in Maryland at 1". All are about 14" now. I keep them in separate 180's. I grew the 2 small ones with a 3rd in a 180 until the 2 ate him.

I find they all eat Pellets but their main diet consists of Mackeral, Herring, Lake Trout, Smelts, Pink Salmon and various Shrimp. They will eat many of the other foods suggested (and not) in this thread.

HEY

CHECK OUT THE bug that comes in as larva with some s. american fish fry on page 15.
hope this gets you there http://piraya.skyrock.com/15.html
If you read all the pages on that French mans tank it will show you that in a large tank they can be kept with many species of fish also it shows what he feeds his and the great colour he gets.
