Pirhana caught in a MN river

To those who are clamoring "Ban Him", lay off. This is a site that tries for education not condemnation, unlike some sites people don't get banned for past stupidites.

Jsodwi, here are some reasons to never repeat that act.

It is illegal, you can be fined and even jailed for it.

You can release a disease strain into the local waters that the fish there have no resistance to, Hexamita comes to mind.

The fish can die a nasty, lingering death because YOU were to irresponsible to deal with it properly.

The fish can live and hook up with one that some other idiot released, establishing a breeding population and screwing up the native fish population.

The fish can live and be caught by a fisherman who shows it off to the local press. Now days that can result in the Fish and Wildlife people spending thousands of dollars doing a bioessay. If they find another one they might end up poisoning the lake to kill off the "resident" population of oscars, costing taxpayers huge ammounts of money. Local legistlators jump in and pass stupid laws to protect the environment and oscars end up illegal in New Jersey. If you think it can't happen look at piranha and snakeheads.

Do everyone a favor and NEVER RELEASE NONNATIVE SPECIES INTO THE WILD!

If you can't keep a fish and can't find it a home do the right thing and whack it with a hammer until it is dead.

I am almost 100% that , that could not be possible.. if you where there are saw the fish yourself while she was catching it then maybe .. but other wise there is no way for it to survive in water that cold.. min is about 72. and at that temp the fish becomes very very lethargic!

The fish was confirmed to be a pirhana by DNR. It was in the local newspaper. This was the summer so it is possible that the water temp was higher, however, the water is fast moving.

Interesting.

Pacu's have been caught in Minnesota too. Mississippi river to be exact. People thought they were piranhas. :grinno:

So there could be breeding populations?

I kept some large pacus through the summer, until fall and winter sets in, a 55 degree water pond. They were OK for a day, but the second and third day was fatal. So ANY tropical fish would not survive in water lower than 55 in my opinion. Even the cichlids (flowerhorns, red devils, and synspilum, also became very daze and confused. I left them there some more to see how they will tolerate this chilling water, and even in the sun, the water stayed at 55 degrees. They all eventrually did not survive, because I wanted to see for myslef if they will survive the winter in sunny California. I am not encouraging the release of tropical fish hobby into the rivers and lakes, even though they will not survive. It's the disease that you don't want to introduce in the wild, because the hobbyists are the ones that will suffer in the long run, like what we are experiencing with the snakeheads.

I think a P could survive even into the low 60s to upper 50s because the climate of paraguay is not too much different then some southern states except alot drier. But my bet would be that what was caught was a pacu.

Rallysman where in Indiana was that pacu caught and Slammer where in Ky are you located?

Vincennes Indiana. the DNR their asked if it was a crappie   (they didnt believe us when we called them)

Releasing your beloved fish into a local lake is a good way for us all to lose our rights to keep non-native fish. Please, don't do it. Post them "for free" and someone will taken them.

I have heard of piranahas being caught in central indiana, and i have heard of saltwater sharks swim up the mississippi river and be caught as north as illinois, it is possible

And please do not release fish into the wild, there are always people like myself who would take them off of your hands...

I let my oscar go in a lake in NJ . How warm do you think that is? Maybe 70

now that is stupid, keep that kind of crap up and we will only be able to buy natives, i like natives, but this is america, i want choices, already cant buy snakeheads and pirhanas cause of irrisponsible hobbyist

if you cant find a home, euthenize, dont let him go wild

k, how to euthenize, thats a good question, i have burried in the back yard, flushed them, throw them in dumpster...if you dont have the balls to do it, understandable, its your pet, have a crazy friend do it. we all got them.

one instance like that lady catching one in the lake, creates a media frenzy, and puts a black eye on our hobby
