placing a new order for 4 Lents

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would avoid any other species of pike in a tank full of lents, and focus on dithers.

red hooks, tin foil barbs, and a catfish that'll get around 15"

When I had a 125g with 4 lents, nothing was safe...Even a large sailfin achara catfish would get bullied all the time, they loved tearing its whiskers off.

If you add any other larger predators, I'd be prepared for things to get nasty.

decided to move some things around and put them in my 180 gallon with a sole 5" Hoplarchus Psittacus.

Thanks all!

Good choice. I hope that Hoplarchus Psittacus is a brute, or you'll be moving him soon.

I would still suggest getting 4-5 silver dollars for dithers. Rapps has them at 3-4" for a good price, and shipping would be cheaper since you're pretty close to him.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy them...Lents are awesome fish, and can be very interactive if you spend time near the tank.

I had two lents in a 220 and they dominated the tank. I did have one smaller Saxatilis pike in there and they left him alone, but they constantly fought with my psittacus and gave all my Atabapo severums hell. I wouldn't have tried any more lents in the same tank based on their behavior. Mine were both males.

Thanks Chris and Ryan!

I just upped the order to 6 so i can better my chances at getting a pair. Cleared the 180 of its former inhabitants and now have a 7" Psittacus, a 6.5 inch Oscar, 3 2.5" Chocolates, and a 4" pint tailed Chaceus.

Getting 6 6-7" Lents on Tuesday for delivery.

Also, i've decided to jump on some Cincta's the next time they are available and will clear out my 150 gallon of its inhabitants for them.

Never got into pikes like this where I'll dump hundreds of bucks...but this forum gets you itching for them.

Please share any further tips or advice for a Pike newbie like me. Thanks!

In my experience pikes in general dont like other pikes or similar long bodied fish. I wish for you the best of luck and look forward to seeing how things turn out.

Sorry to tell you but those chocolates wont be there for long. If it can fit in the pikes mouth, it'll eat them ASAP.

Pike can be complete A holes, but they are awesome fish to keep. I would suggest some good sight breaks with driftwood, and plants.

Use some large river rocks around the base of your plants (live or fake) and you wont have to worry about them digging them up.

The 7" Psittacus, a 6.5 inch Oscar are gonna be in for a surprise because they're about to be outnumbered and out maneuvered.

If you want your pike to be more outgoing, I would avoid giving them caves. You can give them things to hide behind, but caves will make them shy.

If you're getting them from Snook (Aquabid) they should be pellet trained, or atleast eager to try them shortly after they are acclimated. They will also be F'in gorgeus...Lots of pinks/purples, and freckles everywhere!

Good luck and keep us posted

Good Tips Chris. Thanks again. I have the tank set up exactly how you mention. I will post pics later when I get a chance after work. Still looking for some larger swords to plants in between the rocks. I have some hornwort tied to my wood and I have a ton of wood with more to come once I find some longer flat pieces to lay over the rocks.

The Psittacus is an A hole himself so hopefully he can cope with the lents. I'm super excited to get these guys in finally.

BTW, this means I will more than likely have a few for sale down the road as they grow.
