in the long run, you should increase your biological filtration, reduce the feeding and remove leftovers regularly. That will help to greatly reduce the population. They are not harmful, but not exactly pleasing to look at, IMO. The shells have nothing to do with this outbreak, only if dead snails are rotting inside.
