in the long run, you should increase your biological filtration, reduce the feeding and remove leftovers regularly. That will help to greatly reduce the population. They are not harmful, but not exactly pleasing to look at, IMO. The shells have nothing to do with this outbreak, only if dead snails are rotting inside.

They might use the shells as a daytime hangout but that is all, most species are about the size of (!) but some get bigger. They often colonise filters.
 
I got some a little while ago, I'm pretty sure they hitched a ride in on some plants!

Why do want to get rid of them? I only ever see mine just after I turn the lights on, and even then you have to look close to see them on the glass. They dont bother me and if they dont harm the fish and feed off waste - then I'm happy for them to stay in my tank :thumbsup:
