Planiceps aka firewood cat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So sorry for your loss man. I've kept mine in a 75 gallons until he reached 12" then moved him to the 3k. For all it's worth, I've always fed him well and gave ample swimming space (maybe not when he reached over 30").

Here's something i've done that i've yet to notice from others. Mine have always had a pretty strong source of current. While in the 75 I got him with a 2600 lph powerhead. Upon moving to the 3k, i have both a power head, a pretty powerful wavemaker and a really powerful return pump. in addition to that, i've got 3 more pumps on places in the tank that i thought would not have as much circulation as i would like. Hence, i would say that there was water movement (in varying intensities) around my tank. I've always noticed him swimming against the current in front of my wavemaker. from there, he would occasionally go down an "park" at the bottom of the tank then go back to swimming. He is one of my most active cats.

I feed him a lot (usually during the night) but the big bulge in his tummy is gone the following morning. for what it's worth, i'm thinking this is a catfish that likes to be active and maybe being too docile does not serve them well.

My water parameters have been consistent throughout. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite below 50ppm nitrate. I run an aquaponic system with pothos and i have a drip system.
Our tap water is 6.5-8.5pH. I do not use anything to treat ph since i've noticed that the fish were doing well.

I use aged water (from a water tank) for my drip system and for water changes/top up.

Very good and desirable input. Thank you, Bob. It sounds like your 3k was stirred so vehemently that there'd be no quiet spots. Where would your planiceps and other fish "park" to rest?

IIRC, you did have some driftwood in the tank. Did they rest in the dw?

As for the tummy bulge - that speaks to high metabolism, which is unusual for catfish. RTCs have the bulge for several days.

Was gonna point this out likely due to its active nature.

And looking at his videos and from what he says the bottom is currentless almost?

They rarely rest under the drift woods. Either the ripsaw, wallago and some other car claimed it or they just dont like (unlike a lot of cats) snuggling under stuff. They rest at the middle part of thr bottom of the tank. also the middle part of the bottom does not have much current since i figured in keeping quite a few bottom dwelling cats, the bottom would not need pumps to have the water moving.

With regard to its tummy, its something i’ve noticed since it was small. It would also go for at least a month without eating from time to time. But then again, it would decide to gulp up at a 12” or more azul without warning. Iirc, he got 3 azuls. :(
