I feed my fish krill, red pellets, green pellets, massivore and some gut-loaded mealworms. I feed them twice a day. Half of the food in the morning and once at night. There are so many different substrates to use. Most use bright multi-colored gravel. I have green, red and crushed coral and the gravel is 2 inches deep. Some use dark substrate, a little gravel or just no substrate at all. I switched from dark rock pebbles to the colored gravel and it made a big difference. The dark rocks made the tank too dark and it didn't look good with the bright fish colors. If I were you, I would use the multicolored gravel and make it about 2 inches deep.
