i'd stick with normal output bulbs for a low tech tank. get some 4ft shop lights from lowes/home depot, get the right bulbs and call it a day! cant get any cheaper than that!

+1. This is a low-tech tank, thus, no co2. Too much light will be a waste without a lot of every other part needed to grow plants very fast.

i figured i would update i just went ahead and got t5 with 250w total for the tank.
i sure hope you plan on adding co2! even with co2 im sure that is too much light. high light on a 75g tank could be achieved with 108w easily, 2x 54w bulbs. the fixture you got is extreme overkill, co2 or not

One t5 bulb would still be overkill without co2. I have a single bulb t5 fixture on my tank without co2 I have to go in with H2o2 every week to kill the algae growing. Co2 is on the way so that should stop.

OP, With a 4 bulb t5 fixture you will HAVE to start pressurized co2 and EI dosing if you don't want to have an algae soup.

i set up the tank with some plants so i figure i'd update pics to come soon, plants.....arnt doing that great but hopefully that'll change i got 1 6.5k and 1 10k t5ho im adding excel in with the instructions every other day, def. getting a pressureized co2 system soon maybe 2-3. I'm a little lost about the whole fertilizer bit and if it is even necessary....

also no problems with algae so far, its been set up for about 1-2 weeks now. i have quite a bit of plants but most are low to moderate. im guessing the reason my plants have been sulking a bit is because one the shipment, and two i had 12k lights on there....no idea what spectrum because it had come with the fixture.

I'm not a plant guy at all, which is why I choose low-light plants. This is a huge portion of the available species and gives you plenty of choices for scaping, etc.

For lighting, I take old reptile lamps and put 100 watt "full spectrum" or "sunlight" fluorescent incandescent replacement bulbs in them. And POW. Looks nice and hot and the plants grow well. Seems to penetrate really well into the water column as well, possibly because of the focusing dome of the lizard lamp. Of course, I'm trying to grow algae (for my CAE squadron and others) on the side, too, so that might need tweaking for other setups...

lol ok...and why is that?

well most of all the plants are doing good but the jungle vals i bought had excessive root rot and i dont think they are going to make it i have to trim them daily. the other plants seem to be doing alot better now i had a little problem with algae but i lowered the time my light was on and it was solved. i also put some nutrient pellets in which seemed to of made the difference?
