Planted Piranha tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with Jp and mike ^

Every shoal is different especially from different socializations. Shoals may display similar traits but they Have different preferences. My reds HATE bright lights. I saw mike's reds before and they were in a bright tank. Correct me if I'm wrong though mike. Anyways I disagree that all reds are the same because my pygos even changed dramatically since the 80g vs. 125g.

Lol never said EVERY SHOAL WAS THE SAME HAHA. Unless your shoal is communist.....

Yes every shoal reacts to lite exactly the same, every shoal thinks oj was guilty!

I said mine don't like lites and I know of others that don't, however I said mine will eventually adjust to them and be A ok!

you guys have a boring weekend or what?

most animal feel calmer under dimmer light but that doesn't mean they don't like bright light. piranha in the wild can be found in murky water with low visibility and low light penetration but can also be found in clear water with lot of light http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8qqTBwLJ68
pygos are in general more skittish, IME they behave the same with or without the light being turned on (as dim as a single 70W HM and as bright as 2x 3bulbs 36" T5HO). of course right after you turn on the light they will be all in shock for a little while but afterward there's not much difference.
in terms of cohabing rhoms, not gonna say much as I have neither the space or cash to make me feel comfortable at trying it out.

Good point about rhoms! My lfs keeps about 10-12 juvies in the same tank.

switching on the lights with a time gap would help in not shocking the fish. It quite natural too.

Get / make timers to switch the lights to ramp up the lighting towards midday and ramp down towards nights.

I have tried this , but not with a pygo tank.

Very good suggestion, the lighting I have makes the Bw have a shimmer effect. I like it !

my air stone is just a regular petsmart 15 doller pump. So not ment for co2 or anything so im going to leave it on 24/7. As for the plants i hope that the java ferns grow I didnt know the leds wouldnt support them well. As for dimming lighting I was thinking about putting duck weed in the tank but I have alot of surface agitation too. I need to change that I know that plants dont liek surface agitation because it lets the bad air the plants need to turn into good air escape lol.

Try a bigger floating plant like water lettuce or something like that. They'll all pile up in the calmest corner and grow, then just scoop some out when they grow too much and sell them lol.
