Planted tank starter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
cant tell how big it is... how big are those tiles? 12"? 24"? when you do photos like that you gotta put a popcan or soemthing in the photo to show its size.

I like the backsize, the gnarly side. I'd put it upright like a wall 7" back from the front of the tank.

It's about 9"long by 7" wide. Here it is in a 5 gal bucket.

here's an update on my tank.
plants: 2xanubias nana, 1xjava fern, 1xanacharis(4 pieces), and a moss ball
fish/shrimp: 2x albino cory, 1xpepered cory, 5x neon tetras, 1x amano shrimp

bought some leaf zone plant food and some flakes.

i got some questions. is the moss ball necessary? because the shrimp needs the algae. i got the other piece of driftwood from petsmart that already has algae on there, and the shrimps been sitting on it eating it for the last couple hours.

and there's a tiny little snail that got into the tank some how? it's like 1cm big lol i did some reasearch and it might be a nerite snail? should i leave it in there?

here's a video.

Nerites snails are safe. they are even usually 2-5$ so... score. tehy are algae eaters.

moss balls are good for shrimp to eat off of and to collect food and such for the shrimp kinda like a lint cloth.

was the filter cycled? thats a lot of fish very quick.

Yeah. Filter is mature and used water from my 230 gallon to fill it.

Should I replace the 9 watt cfl bulb with a 13 watt one? that's the highest I saw at home depot. Will it make a difference?

Well I've been doing some reading and it seems the more light the faster te plant growth. So I am using one of my 65 watt compact fluorescent fixture I had on my 100 gal on this thing now lol.

How many hours a day should I leave it on?

The more light, the more the plants photosynthesize.
The more the plants photosynthesize the more demand they have for Carbon and Nutrients (nitrates, phosphates, potassium, Iron + trace elements)

Since algae is also stimulated, but NOT limited by the need for all those nutrients, herein lies the problem and the need for a balance.

Your substrate looks white.?
