I can think of one thing...easy maintenance. Gravel just traps the detritus making siphoning a PITA. Sand is better but you need to stir it frequently to avoid dead areas.
I only ask because I used to keep all my tanks bare bottom for that very reason, all now have substrate in them. Just curious if there is any other reason for it other than that
