Would something like that work in the overflow box for the wet dry?
 
Would you confirm that excretion thing? I was told so, that it is very effective agains algae formation...

Most planted tank people fell that with a healthy fast growing community of plants
nutrients are not available for most algae

Some plants do have root excretions to poison other plants that may compete for nutrients

Can't hurt to try...Just doen't make it so the overflow can get blocked.

In my pond filter set ups...after the lower bio filter chamber I have the flow emptying into a smaller upper pond thats heavilly planted. Even though the bio load increased over time due to spawning and fish growth the nitrates DECREASED over time as the plants in the upper pond matured. The only real differance I see here is in scale.
 
i did it with spider plants at the school
but then i started dosing the tank with fertilizers and the spiders died
 
Do you think bamboo shoots that are sold for aquariums would work? They don't seem to do well completely submerged but this would allow the tops to stick out.
