Is it common practice for people to con others into buying a false species? Is there not a way to avoid this from happening again?

There should be a way to report con-artists to the Administrator of E-bay. :swear:

Sad to say...con artists are everywhere in regards to fish trade...its been like this since the beginning...even in the retail front...walk in customers can be conned of buyign something that is not just under their nose and seeing the real fish even...let alone buying fishes on-line like this...

so..better back up with ur research and know what you are paying for...

its common here too.

Best way is to not jump into buying such things so quickly. Do some research and be sure of what u're getting before buying it.

they are not a fake they are different color morph but they are not rare.

here is the link to the one for sale here in colorado

it's the top fish on the right side.

real platinums are rare.

the so called silver ones will revert to their normal colorations if not kept in a clear or white surroundings. An old trick here.

this is based on that fish will change color to suit their environment.

As RockyGoldy pointed out, real platinums are paper white and have no other color tones on them.

Everyone can try this out at home. Just take a baby Jard and keep it in a white tub for a few mths. Can be done w Silver aros too.

platinum is silver. there is a white color morph as well that isn't rare either. both of these fish are legit I have seen them with my own eyes in stores. these are just color morphs. the platinum stay silver and the whites stay white.. with darker color tanks there color does change a little at first but overall they stay these colors. either way neither of the these fish are rare don't be fooled. they are neat though
here is the difference

color stays the same?

then y do these fish need to be kept in a white tub there?

dude, have u kept any of these fish? And how long have you seen them at the store if u havent? There are many ways to decieve buyers.

I'm not here to flame u but i'm here to give preventive advise for hobbyists. These fish all come from our region, where i'm afraid alot of "work" goes into them to make them look nicer or more unique. Your "silver morphs" are plentiful here. but they go at US$9 a piece. Accomplished by placing them in a white tub since birth makes them this way. However if u feel u are correct then by all means go ahead.

here is an example of a real platinum. Its silver and not white.

hey, just a thought... if more people did the nancy reagan drug thing "just say no"... to all these crazy prices then most of the "hucksters" would lose their market, so to speak....

I have seen these fish stay in stores for up to 3 months with no color change. I just used the pic of them in the tub because its the only one I could find. If they change these fish with their surroundings then how do they get the silver jardini? use silver rocks? I am just as ignorant in these fish as most people but I have seen them on dark substrate and not change color. also as I stated previously platinum aro's are silver you stated that they were paper white not me. I simply pointed out the difference. I am just looking for answers and stating my thoughts on the subject so please don't take any offense to this conversation. bottom line though as we both stated these aro's are not rare and people should only pay what they are worth. which isn't anywhere close to what some scammers are asking for them.. thanks for all of your information I just wish I could afford to experiment with this and see for myself.. happy fish keeping
