Platy breeding gene pool

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Platies can breed at about 1 1/2 inch for females. you can raise several in a 5 gallon tank.

My rearing tank will be 10 gal. I have 40 fry right now that will go in it. When should I take fish that I don't want for breeding stock to LFS?

I now have 90 fish, started with 4. Hmm, rabbits aren't that promiscuous after all.

I'm hoping to pick up a pair at the lfs today that may create some colors that I've never seen before. The male is a "sunset tux" (goldish-orange turning to red toward the tail and the usuall black"tux") with the darkest cleanest markings I've seen in a while. The female is a red tail dalmation (white body, red tail, and black spots) . I'm hoping the results might be calico, and calico tux???

I'm still sore from missing out on a pair of white wag hi-fins...

Good luck with your platy project ewurm.Im doing something similar with common guppies, just started this time but years ago had a strain I had been woking on for 10 years.I agree with the maintain 3 groups and cross them every few generations thats what I did.And I would also very occasionally introduce a male that had characteristics I was breeding for from the lfs feeder tank.Great fun long term project.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Are you letting them drop their broods in the tank or seperating them into a breeding trap / net?

Do platy's eat their young?

O

you should breed belonesox, and selectively breed them until they are all 2 ft long. That would be awesome :D

Keep all the fish of one sex and buy the other sex from a diff LFS or supplier to keep the gene pool varied. ;-) I've seen blue/sunset variants- blue body with a bit of orange on the dorsal fin and uppermost region of the body.
